My Story: The Evolution of Rebekah Theresa
Lost in Transition
After graduating from Syracuse University in 2018, I was lost.
I felt I had so many different skills but had no idea how to fit them (or myself) into one type of job.
In the few years that followed, I’d lived a thousand different lives. I moved to Spain and learned Spanish, taught English, got a Master in Business Organization from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and graduated top of my class (just some shameless bragging), did administrative work for family friends and colleagues, worked as a freelance writer, dipped my toes in customer success, managed social media accounts - it felt like I'd done every job in the world.
The Comparison Trap
It was a time of great growth and personal development, as I pushed myself to absorb as much as I could. But as I watched my friends and fellow university alumni land amazing jobs and advance in their careers, I couldn't help but feel a sense of inadequacy. While they were reaching new heights, I felt like I was being left behind. The constant comparisons made me question my own abilities and left me feeling lost and unsure about my professional future. It felt like everyone I knew was getting hired by amazing companies and moving up in their careers.
Except for me.
Searching for Direction
For years, I asked myself, "What am I good at?" I felt like I had to pick one skill and stick to it to find work—- to me, that felt unfulfilling. Yet at the same time, I felt like I was just jumping around doing different things and seeing what stuck simply to survive.
I didn't realize that my inability to pick one thing could turn out to be a gift.
I first heard about Virtual Assistance work in 2021 during a 10-day COVID isolation-induced TikTok binge. It sounded interesting, but I almost entirely dismissed it, thinking it was just the latest “side hustle” that would eventually fizzle out.
But it had always been in the back of my brain.
The Revelation
I can’t say I had an “a-ha” moment. It took me about two more years of learning about myself as an adult and a professional to fully understand my strengths, my passions, and what value I could provide. All this time, the answer to my question had been in front of me all along. I was just too stubborn to see it.
Finding Purpose
Two years later, I received a call from a family friend who was in the process of opening a Residential Care Home in Texas. She realized that she needed to take on some of the marketing and administrative duties that were necessary for the business, but she was already stretched thin with her core responsibilities.
She told me she needed “a virtual assistant.”
After a few months of work and a successful opening, I realized this was something that I not only enjoyed but could be a sustainable career.
So I decided to take the plunge.
Building My Business
Cut to now-with an entrepreneurial spirit, a sense of perseverance comparable to Erin Brokovich, and an optimistic outlook, I’m building my online business (mostly) from scratch. Along the way, I've discovered that the key to my fulfillment lies in embracing my diverse skill set and leveraging it to provide tailored support to clients to allow their businesses to grow–and effectively allow myself to grow.
